I Visited a Local Art Exhibition This Weekend– and You Should Too.
As we approach cooler weather and longer nights, it is imperative that we visit as many creative functions as we can. This weekend I went to Doha Reimagined, Saturno Magazine’s Art Exhibition at Al Wadi MGallery in Mshaireb. As someone who enjoys visiting galleries and exhibitions around Doha and beyond, I found this one particularly interesting for many reasons. In the interest of full disclosure, 2 of my friends were exhibiting artists and I had to go show my support! But along the way I was able to discover other artists and their touching work. The first piece that caught my eye was a painting by the artist Maryam Hashem, a local painter. Her piece titled “I want to die bs btb5r first” was an oil on canvas piece that was full of contrast and emotion. Having been painted during the missile attacks which had started in Ramadan, the painting has the ability to resonate with many in our society. The details captured in the painting are undeniably emotive. The girls pale, blue face captures the anxiety and fear experienced in that period, her henna painted hands and stance over the mubkhar showed me that regardless of the fear— life goes on. More works in other mediums are also on display. Films, photography, and even designs. Visiting the exhibition and interacting with the art gives the visitor a chance to marvel at the range of creativity amongst local artists. Seeing an independent organization run the show added a lot of flare to the exhibition. The minute you step into the gallery, you feel the passion for sharing art that the people behind the scenes have. It’s refreshing to see creatives in Qatar come together to carry out such a project. Doha Reimagined is on display until October 3rd, add it to this week’s itenirary!
